What better way to spend a Sunday than eating lots of carbs and sugar throughout New York City?

We started at The Donut Pub, at first intrigued by the Oreo Muffins that were in the window. Upon entering, however, it was the Red Velvet Donut that caught our attention. And at a total cost of $3.10, buying both muffin and donut was the right choice.

Next, we were off to Alice’s Tea Cup for some tea and scones. This cute little Lewis Carroll-inspired spot (with four locations throughout the city) offers a fine array of baked goods, including scones, muffins, cupcakes, cakes, and giant-sized cookies.

For $10, you get a pot of tea and a choice of two scones with clotted cream and preserves. (Take note: there is a $10 per person minimum on weekends!) Their tea menu was extraordinary, but we decided on the Rooibus Bourbon (red tea infused with bourbon and vanilla) and Silver Needle (a rare white tea).

Our choice of scones included a savory ham and cheese, the slightly spiced pumpkin, a sweet chocolate strawberry, and a lemon blackberry that had the largest blackberries I’ve ever seen baked into it. Selections that day also included buttermilk and butter pecan scones.

Finally, we ended our night with the lovely Levain Bakery. Known for their delectable cookies, Levain is a tiny little place (no room for sitting) that sells sugary bits of heaven. We went here on the suggestion of my roommate, who raves about their blueberry muffins; but since we went late in the evening (they’re open til 7pm all week), we went for the Chocolate Chip Walnut and Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip Cookies and a loaf of Ciabatta bread.

The cookies are about as decadent as you can get—large, soft, and worthy of sharing, even for someone with a huge sweet tooth like me. (Check out that grease stain on the wax paper!) The ciabatta was warm when we got it, and achieved that perfect balance of crusty on the outside/chewy on the inside that fresh loaves of bread should always have.
